The Investment Road to Freedom

The goal of this blog is to track my progress as I take the investment road to financial freedom. As I sit at my desk today I am a few months short of my 35th birthday and like a lot of people my age or older I wonder if, and not when I can retire. I wish I started this path in my 20’s but it is pointless to ponder over that. I start now so lets list my ultimate goals….

40$100KWorking full time
50$500KWorking full time or option of working part time
55$1MWorking Part time or retired

Now these goals may well change. Health and other unknown circumstances may alter the figures involved. Just looking at the table above those figures seem like a reachable target. Say for example if from age 20 to 50 I invested $500 a month and achieved a return of 12% a year that would give me just a little over $1.5M. I just wish I had done that!

So to reach my goal I have to take a look at what I have now. My Investment road to freedom fund will be made up of the following;

Brokerage Account

Other Investments

I’m not a huge fan of my 401K as the investment options are very limited but my work offer a contribution match of 50% up to 6% of salary. I started contributing in 2011 and this year I am now eligible for the matching contribution which is paid twice a year (So I believe I will get my first payment in June or July).

Below is my current fund values

401K$1539.556% per paycheck (paid every 2 weeks)
IRA$855.84 Minimum $150 to $416 per month
Brokerage$898.07Minimum $150 per month
Other Investments$2198.52Whenever possible
TOTAL VALUE = $5491.98

Another goal is to pay of the new house way before retirement, which with the wife was purchased last summer. We currently owe $173323.73 paying $1284 a month with a rate of 4.875. My investment plan is centered around covered calls and dividend stocks.

    Thanks Matt! Great article you did on Ford. They have been on my radar for a covered call play for a few months now
