The Investment Road to Freedom

January 2015 – Month in Review

It’s been a while since my last post and I want to get back to keeping my blog up to speed. In the time since my last post I’ve been pretty much doing the same which is building my Investment Road to Freedom fund. A dental emergency wiped out my $4k + Loyal3 account which was very disappointing but I’ll build it back up.

New Purchases: $41

  • In my Loyal3 commission free account I brought 0.1410 shares of Viacom (VIAB), 0.1087 shares of Disney (DIS), 0.2433 shares of Microsoft (MSFT) and 0.1024 shares of Apple (AAPL)

The partial shares of Viacom were my first involvement in that stock and I look forward to adding more over time. I have 41 shares of Apple in my other taxable account. These 4 buys in my Loyal3 account are the only shares in that account after selling all previous companies in that account.

Sales: None.

Option Trades: $22.03

AT&T (T) – BTC Jan2015 $34 put at $0.46 x 100. This cost me $60.98 after commission. This is in my IRA account.
AT&T (T) – STO Feb2015 $34 put at $0.98 x 100. This earned me $83.01 after commission. This is in my IRA account.

I really like AT&T as a company. I have my cell phone with them and so does the wife. The reason for this put roll out is while I’m happy to own them I don’t want to just yet. My cost basis is $33.43.

Dividends: $1.51

  • Wal-Mart (WMT) – $1.51

While a very low number my first dividend ever in the month of January. This was received in my Loyal3 account.

Forward 12 Month Dividend Forecast: $336.68

Looking forward to breaking the $500 mark.

Deposits: $1075

Out of this $1075, $1015 went to my IRA and $60 to Loyal3. My immediate goal is to reach the full $5500 allowed for the 2014 IRA year – I have until April 15th to do this and I am currently at $3470. My goal is $1000 total deposits a month so I am ahead of my plan.

Investment Road to Freedom fund value:

The fund value stands at $33958.17.

The breakdown of the individual accounts show

  • 401k = $14217.61
  • IRA = $9151.05
  • Taxable = $7869.39
  • Other = $1934.92
  • EF = $280.57
  • Lending Club = $462.75
  • Loyal3 = $41.88

My best month ever was November when I topped $36k but the Loyal3 sell off dropped me significantly.

Credit Card Debt: $0

Wahoo!

Car Loan: $26250.40

Slowly paying this down. Long way to go.

Mortgage: $172429.92

Our monthly payment is $1269.24

Income from Credit Card Rewards: $100

$75 of this was from my Amex Blue Reserved card and the other $25 from my FNBO account.

Summary:

I was happy to get my Loyal3 account going again. I was pondering to close it or keep it open. In the end the no commission is a big seller and being able to buy partial shares from as little as $10 is a win win. February hoping to move closer to that $5500 in my IRA for the 2014 year. February is also the one remaining month that I have never received a dividend so we shall see if we break that. On the options front I have that put in AT&T. If it is in the money I’ll either except assignment or roll again for more income.

Hope everyone had a great month!

July 2014 – Month in Review

New Purchases: $235

  • In my Loyal3 commission free account I brought 0.6257 shares of Wal-Mart (WMT), 0.2319 shares of Disney (DIS), 0.3171 shares of Starbucks (SBUX) and 1.4555 shares of Apple (AAPL).

Sales: None.

Option Trades: ($6.99)

Coca-Cola (KO) – BTC Aug2014 $40 put at $0.15 x 100. This cost me $29.99 after commission. This is in my Taxable account.
Ford (F) – STO SeptWK1 2014 $17.50 put at $0.38 x 100. This earned me $23.00 after commission. This is in my Taxable account.

The reason for these option trades is that I already had 100 shares of Ford in my taxable account that I had a covered call on that was in the money. My long term plan is to always have another 100 shares in reserve that I can use to recover any covered call that is going in the direction I do not want. For this particular option I choose to close by KO put early and take those profits.

Dividends: $2.44

  • Coca-Cola (KO) – $2.44

Made $0.20 more than July 2013. Not much but July is normally a slow dividend month for me. That will change in the future. 2014 dividend income now stands at $94.35.

Forward 12 Month Dividend Forecast: $279.06 +1.65%

I should break the $300 mark by the end of September .

Deposits: $790.66

Out of the last 7 months this is the best. Out of this $790.66, $160.66 went to my 401K, $400 to my Roth IRA, $20 went to my taxable, $25 went to Lending Club and $195 to Loyal3. Total deposits for the year stand at $4261.87 or an average of $608.84 per month. My goal is $1000 so I need to really pick this up.

Investment Road to Freedom fund value:

  • Lending Club = $369.37 +7.89%
  • Loyal3 = $2692.72 +12.59%

Credit Card Debt: $2100.42 -6.40%

Working on this. This is 0% rate

Car Loan: $28895.13 -1.46%

Slowly paying this down.

Mortgage: $173795.91 -0.13%

Our monthly payment is $1210. Zillow estimates the home value at $244k.

Income from Pay: $4123.26

My take home amount.

Income from Credit Card Rewards: $50

This was from my Wells Fargo CC. I am at $416.20 for the year.

Summary:

Highlight this month was the deposit amount of $790. I’m aiming to get over $800 for this coming month and I feel confident I can do that.  I’m getting ready to make another purchase in my IRA in the next 6 weeks. I have 8 shares of KO and I will be buying another 92 when I have the full amount of funds available. I will then be able to do a covered call on that stock.

Hope everyone had a great month!

June 2014 – Month in Review

June turned out to be a great month as my portfolio broke the $30k mark and I also got my best ever dividend month. And to top that I had a month of watching the World Cup!

New Purchases: $155

  • In my Loyal3 commission free account I brought 0.2634 shares of Wal-Mart (WMT), 0.1207 shares of Disney (DIS), 0.3903 shares of Starbucks (SBUX) and 1.0255 shares of Apple (AAPL).

Option Trades: None

Dividends: $41.50

  • Wal-Mart (WMT) – $0.30
  • Ford (F) – $25
  • McDonald’s (MCD) – $16.20

Highest ever month beating March by some 30 cents. I’m hoping by the end of the year to have at least one $50 month. 2014 dividend income now stands at $91.91.

  • EF = $170.97 +3.03%
  • Lending Club = $342.86 +8.57%
  • Loyal3 = $2391.86 +11.42%

Great month all round for all sections of the portfolio. To finally break the $30k mark was a big plus for me – I spent 11 months in the 20’s. I aim to not spend that amount of time in the 30’s.

Credit Card Debt: $2243.92 -4.47%

Working on this.

Car Loan: $29323.95 -1.44%

Slowly paying this down.

Mortgage: $174020.36 -0.13%

Our monthly payment is $1210. I guess like most people this moves very slowly and it certainly appears that way.

Income from Pay: $3960.22

My take home amount.

Income from Credit Card Rewards: $39.24

This was from my Costco account. I get my 2% reward for the executive membership every June then in February I get the Amex Costco reward. I am at $366.20 for the year.

Net-worth: $82018 +7.18%

Summary:

Lots of green in this month’s summary which is what I want to see. So many good points from the month of June. Breaking the $30k mark, best month of dividend income, best deposit month of the year.

Hope everyone had a great month!

I’m slowly adding to my WMT shares. Now up to 1.2159 shares.

May 2014 – Month in Review

May was a month that I built up my Apple position as I get ready for the 7:1 split next week. My goal is to eventually get 100 shares so I can do covered calls. I’m at 7.0674 shares now. I hope to reach that target next year. I was also hoping May might be the month my portfolio hits the $30k mark but it was not to be. That will come next month!

New Purchases: $4055.57

  • In my Loyal3 commission free account I brought 2.6986 shares of Apple (AAPL), 0.4319 shares of Disney (DIS) and 0.4600 shares of Wal-Mart (WMT).
  • 4 shares of Apple (AAPL) at $593.68 for a total of $2384.57 in my regular taxable account.

Sales: None.

Option Trades: None

Dividends: $6.77

  • Apple (AAPL) – $6.77

First time I’ve ever had a dividend payment in May and the first I have received a dividend payment for three consecutive months. 2014 dividend income now stands at $50.41

Forward 12 Month Dividend Forecast: $270.90 +49.26%

Huge increase from last month no doubt driven by a big month in buys in my portfolio last month.

Deposits: $609.42

Considering we had a vacation at the beginning of the month this figure is not to bad. Out of this $609.42, $105.19 went to my 401K, $155 to my Roth IRA, $25 went to Lending Club and $324.23 to Loyal3. Total deposits for the year stand at $2730.85 or an average of $546.17 per month. My goal is $1000 so I need to really pick this up.

Investment Road to Freedom fund value:

The fund value stands at $29579.80. +4.24%

The breakdown of the individual accounts show

  • 401k = $12409.68 +2.43%
  • IRA = $6028.04 +3.52%
  • Taxable = $6727.55 8.63%
  • Other = $1786.68 -0.96%
  • EF = $165.84 +10.71%
  • Lending Club = $315.92 +15.35%
  • Loyal3 = $2146.09 +153.06%

The drop in my taxable is because I transferred funds to my Loyal3 account – hence the big increase in that account. Should break the $30k mark in the next month.

Credit Card Debt: $2348.56 -3.14%

Working on this.

Car Loan: $29751.65 -1.38%

New vehicle is one year old. I’m looking forward to paying this down even more. I’m in the twenties now. My car loan is greater than my entire portfolio :( After next month that will never happen again :)

Mortgage: $174243.90 -0.13%

Our monthly payment is $1210.

Income from Pay: $3977.44

Got a pay-rise this month. It works out to something like an extra 80 cents an hour.

Net-worth: $76251 +1.25%

After last months drop now on the way back up. The figure is higher than this but I don’t include things like value of my vehicle.

Summary:

Wow a big month of buys. Not sure when I will spend over $4k on stocks in one month again. Next month should be a big month as I break that $30k mark.

Hope everyone had a great month!

April 2014 – Month in Review

Another month gone by, taxes done and looking forward to summer. April was not a bad month. I paid down my credit card debt a little and also picked up my second ever bonus at work.

New Purchases: $295

As discussed in my post on the 28th I brought 0.3039 shares of Apple (AAPL), 1.0165 shares of Disney (DIS) and 0.6275 shares of Wal-Mart (WMT). These were all in my Loyal3 account.

  • Lending Club = $273.89 +10.81%
  • Loyal3 = $848.27 +900.80%

Credit Card Debt: $2424.14 -26.30%
